What? Yes! Oh, I guess it would be proper and polite to let you, my readers in on the source of Interjections (by the way, I learned that term from Schoolhouse Rock when it first came out). Kamala Harris’ favorite album, Stevie Wonder’s masterful, Songs in the Key of Life.
It was 1976 and I was living in Frankfurt, Germany. AFN, the only American station, played those songs and they became the backdrop to my life and still are.
I have this classic scene in my latest Rom Com manuscript involving one of the songs from that album. Okay, I’m tempted to include it here, but you’ll just have to wait for the book. I can’t wait for you to read it!
But, enough about me, back to Kamala Harris. Talk about an exciting time in life, it is right now. Oh, you know I vote, because I’ve written about it and how I do it always as an homage to my paternal grandmother-the first among US women to “be allowed” to vote in our country.
Oh, wait, my monkey mind is back to Stevie Wonder. I always have a song playing in my head. When I was younger, I sang the words, often without listening to the lyrics, simply memorizing them, or at least memorizing what I thought they were. I have since learned in this day and age of lyrics printed online, that I have been singing some words, and even entire lines, absolutely incorrectly. I don’t care. Stevie Wonder always makes me feel better. My Presidential Candidate likes my music!
Of course, what we were influenced to do with each of our lives, is completely different from one another, however, we both wanted/want to meet people where they are, and inspire change and celebrate individuality, choice and unity.
The work begins within. It is hard as hell. It is a choice each and every day. Some days are easier than others. Yesterday was not one of them. I actually dehydrated myself with the quantity of tears I cried!
But today, I feel hope. My PR team let me know that I have two podcasts set up, one magazine article, one venue rented for a reading and book signing and they are working on more. So cool.
Think of this writing piece, like an album-each paragraph (song) is different, but each is part of a larger, memorable idea, a large, memorable life.
Songs in the Key of Life, you take me back and bring me forward. Today’s song, “I Wish.” Thank you, Ms. Harris, for taking me back and bring us all forward.
Thank you each, for reading my piece. Is there an album you want to share here? Please do!
“Think of this writing piece, like an album-each paragraph (song) is different, but each is part of a larger, memorable idea, a large, memorable life.” I love your words summarizing this piece! Yes, I feel a renewed sense of hope with Kamala running for office. I didn’t know this album of Stevie Wonder’s is her favorite. My husband loves this one as well. Who doesn’t love Stevie Wonder? You now have Brent and I discussing albums on what is a beautiful sunny day in our area. 🌞
I love The Book of Life. Isn’t that Stevie Wonder or is my memory playing tricks?
