For as long as I can remember (even though my mother forbade us to wear one as they were what “Hoods” wore) I have called the above garment, a jeans jacket.
I work with people who are considerably younger than me, and they all call it a “jean jacket.” I was flabbergasted! What? How could that be? Was it a generational (or more than one generation) shift in vocabulary?
I swear, everyone I knew in the 1970s and 80s called them jeans jackets. As in, “Just a minute, it’s a little chilly out. Let me get my jeans jacket since my sweatshirt no longer has a neckline as I cut it after I saw “Flashdance.”
The jacket is made from jeans material so it must be a jeans jacket, yes? Well, unless you call jeans, dungarees, in which case you would be going to get your dungarees jacket.
Isn’t that an odd word…dungarees? Dung as in poop? I mean, you got your Dung Beetle, right, so the obvious jump is Poop Pants.
I digress. So, what is it? What do you call the item worn as a jacket made of jeans material? You have to tell me, please! Jean, or Jeans, what is it?
Oh, just in case you were worried about me wearing one (as I do on a regular basis) I never became a “Hood” (short for Hoodlum) contrary to my mother’s concern and conclusion.
Thank you for reading, and remember if you would, to hit the “Like” button to show that you read my piece. Yes, yes, it helps for the publishing world to see that I have readers. It does not mean you agree with me on whatever topic I am blabbering on about on a Saturday. Thank you!
Over here in UK we call them 'denim jackets'. I feel that 'jeans jacket' is much better than 'jean jacket', though - so I'm with you on this one, Mary!
I’ve had so many ….. I miss the ones that have disappeared !
