For a kid who grew up in the 1970’s, the music streaming services in 2024 and the ability to make a playlist by simply finding a song and “adding it” to my list is truly heavenly.
Oh my goodness, I remember taping songs from the radio onto a tape and then a few days later the tape gets jammed, or twisted, and that is the end of that. Have you heard of Desert Island Discs? Famous people choose their favourite eight songs https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qnmr
Yes, I used to love when NPR did Desert Island Discs!! Thank you for the link! Ahh,...the hours spent with a pencil, trying to unjam or untwist the cassette tape. Good memories.
You just brought me down memory land big time! I remember creating my playlists with either existing albums or with the radio. Having your cassette player on pause until one of your songs came on the radio and you dove across your room to hit play. You presented a good question: where did all of our cassettes go???
I love that so much!!! Yes, it was so fun to hear songs I didn't know. I'm still thinking about the 8 songs I'd choose! How about you, Kate? Your 8 songs would be...?
I am not really a musical / auditory person. Nowadays I rarely listen to music or have the radio on - unless I am encouraged, for instance by your article. I like musicals & opera because they have the visual + auditory. So, I would find it hard to choose 8 songs!
Ahhh. I do like musicals. Most of my favorite songs are from The Way Back Machine of my teens and 20's. I find that I must have some sort of true emotional attachment/memory to really have it make it to the "favorites" list.
I think the emotional attachment is why we remember songs from our teens and twenties, when we were attracted to songs that matched our reality. I am going to do a piece about Desert Island Discs soon.
I never made a Playlist. I was a technical moron then and now. Maybe I was just lazy😀 But I loved buying albums of groups I enjoyed. We have Sirius radio in one of our cars now and would have loved having that back in the day as well.
Oh, yes! Sirius is, or should I say "was" fun. I had it when I first bought my car 2 years ago, but once the free subscription ran out, I never paid for more. Oh yes! I loved buying albums too. I adored going to record stores.
Wendy, now I've got to find that and play it. I've never heard of the song or the group. Some might be said that the majority of my playlists are very 70's, 80's, some current songs. Perhaps it will help me get my rear in gear and get rid of stuff!

Yes, you have risen above the naysayers, to whom all I have to say is, “Neigh, neigh.🐴 🐴
Dance With A Stranger by Lake Street Dive
This tune gets me moving.
Mary, I have never heard of this and will listen to it soon! Sounds intriguing, Thank you.
I just recently “discovered” this group although they’ve been around for years, Mary. 🎶

Oh, yes! The quick move to catch "that song." So much excitement and total irritation when a DJ would talk at the end of the song!!
Well thank you - instead of cleaning, which I should have done, I have been finding and listening to the songs in the comments!!!

Ooh, I can't wait to read it!

Our favorite song while packing to move last winter was Give Up Give In by Kick the Robot. Made it lots easier to get rid of stuff!
