I volunteered last year and will do so again at the local ‘Friends of the Library’ bookstore. It’s located in an old drugstore, and the original marble topped counter and twisting stools are still there. Books for sale are donated. Some old old stuff but not tons. Unfortunately, books in really bad shape don’t make it to the shelves.

So glad you and Laura got together

Oh, I love that the marble countertop and stools are still there! What is the history of the place? I am such a Research Nut. I do love finding out the history connected with old buildings. It pains me so, when books in bad shape get eliminated from libraries. I recall pulling books out of the trash can at one of the schools where I worked, because they were in "bad shape." I almost cried when I saw how many were in there! I took as many as I could. Thank you for reading my piece and now, you have me beyond curious about this bookstore history!

Ok, Ok... you got me! The song lyrics took me to ‘you might as well face it, you’re addicted to love’ (thank you Robert Palmer) but no, I had a really good chuckle when I came instead to.... The Forest Lord?!? Pretty funny!

Yes, a good bookstore is exactly the type of fun I enjoy going through in a leisurely manner. Especially one full of used books, those tattered pages that scream ‘I’ve been well loved’ like my old favorite bookstore Easton’s in downtown Mount Vernon, Wa. I also love the really old, twisty turny bookstores like Powell’s in Portland, easy to get lost when time is not an issue or Elliot Bay in Seattle, so many choices and also full of all the extras one can expect from a ‘we only sell new stuff’ kind of store.

Oh, that Robert Palmer-loved his voice! Okay Kate, I've never had a "Bucket List" before, but your list of bookstores gave me that "Eureka" moment! My Bookstore Bucket List! (Oh, there's the title of my next book!! This is just wonderful. YES to "I've been well loved" books! Thank you for adding to my new "Must Visit" list.

What a wonderful piece, Mary! I adore old bookstores. When I lived in NYC, I visited The Strand regularly - a treasure trove of literary delights.

Oh, thank you, Wendy! I just knew you were an old bookstore soul. "The Strand" is such a lovely name for a bookstore, and now, it is added to my "Bookstore Bucket List." Do you have any great bookstores where you live now?

Fact & Fiction in Missoula is a lovely little store, though I've never thought of it as old.
