A Pocket Full of Glitter
There is something so unexpected about seeing specs of glitter show up in my life. It first started when my daughter was an infant, and she would wake in her crib with a spec of iridescent, green glitter on her face.
Where had it come from? I hadn’t used glitter, didn’t have any at home, wasn’t working outside the house, and her dad did not work in a profession that ever included glitter. I decided it was from fairies.
What else could it have been? When I was a teacher of young children, one of the best experiences was watching their faces whenever I’d break out the glitter for an activity. (Our custodian did not share this excitement. Ha/ha, I discovered that using a lint roller on the carpet, post glitter usage, picks it up where a vacuum cannot)
Their eyes would widen, and even the most street-wise of my four-year-olds (and trust me, many had witnessed violence beyond your imagination) would soften and say, “GLITTER!”
The other day, I pondered some of life’s joys, and glitter came to me as one of them. I have decided to (on occasion) bring glitter in my pocket and unobtrusively sprinkle it in places I go.
How fun to think of young and old people looking down and saying, “Glitter!”. When I was in second grade, my teacher, Mrs. Hoxie, told us that when you see glitter, it means that a leprechaun has been there. Being of part Irish descent myself, I was sure she was correct.
Will it mean that I am littering? I am a big keeper of the environment and I don’t want to be an unwitting contributor to harming the environment. However, a little pinch of glitter is perhaps just what the world needs.
The awe, thrill, and wonder that the unexpected color and sparkle may be the thing that brightens someone’s day (including mine). I will let you all know how my Glitterotty goes. I’m super excited. Simple pleasures. Mom always said they were the best, and I think, perhaps, she was right.
I especially liked the part about your street-wise stúdents getting thrilled, as well as your sprinkling idea. And good tip about the lint roller!
Reminds me of a tshirt Chelsea used to have.
I was going to conquer the world but was distracted by something sparkly.
