Barb
She died.
She lived life large
We used to pick a song to go with the day.
The Day the DC Mayor was arrested for cocaine use,
I suggested, “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City” (Springsteen)
The day before Winter Break,
She said, “Anticipation” (Carly Simon)
We would go back and forth like this for years,
Until she died.
She told me not to be sad, but to honor her by working
Which was all she ever wanted to do.
We were teachers together,
We planned some of the best, most engaging lessons ever
We laughed to tears
But she never wanted to cry together.
We drank champagne and when she would pop the cork over her deck
She would always yell, “Freedom!”
Whenever I dare to live life large, to do something daring, I always think of Barb.
Today’s song is, “Linus and Lucy” (Vince Guaraldi).
What’s your song for today? Tell me below, please. And live life “large”.
My song for today is “Peace Piece” by Bill Evans. It’s sweet and longing. It’s apropos for today after a 4-day holiday.
