Why is the Ethel Merman hit, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” playing through my head? Well, for starters, my upcoming Book Launch, December 3rd at the independent bookstore, People’s Book Takoma in Takoma Park, MD!
Ahhhh, Takoma Park, I could tell you some stories of when I lived there. I was in my 20’s and early 30’s. I was a regular at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Food Co-op. I would regularly take the Takoma Park Metro to explore downtown DC.
Doesn’t that all sound so earthy and independent? If only I had felt that way and recognized it that way. But, I didn’t. All I could think of was, my current boyfriend who was obsessed with his former girlfriend (should have pulled a Lizzo and “walked my fine ass out the door.,”) and also the fact that I was ditched and had the urge for going. (Thank you, Army Brat upbringing!)
Did I tell you this story from my DC travels? It was summer, so I was clad in my requisite chic shorts, form fitting tank, toe ring sandals, rose colored sunglasses (hey, I had to have something to make the world look better) and I had to go to the bathroom.
I looked around and the nearest building was the Capital. So, I saw a side door, opened it, and proceeded down the hallway. (Yep, this was possible in the 1980’s)
Wow-it was like I had entered a small city. To my right was a barbershop-very fancy, and none other than the Speaker of the House, Tip O’Neil was getting his hair cut.
I still had to pee. So, I walked up to a Security Guard, and asked where the nearest bathroom was. He was kind, asked if I had lost my tour group and I explained that “No, my boyfriend is MIA and I am just wandering DC and need the use of a toilette.”
He smiled and pointed the way. Oh, my stars, I entered the most beautiful bathroom I had ever seen in my life! No time to ponder it too much, because the couple of Diet Cokes I had quaffed earlier were creating an urgency that even my iron bladder culled from years of COL. Dad refusing to stop on road trips until the “appointed time” could not hold much longer.
I don’t drink soda anymore. The Capital has fences around it. (Thank you, Jan. 6th mob for that) The boyfriend is long gone and….I have a book coming out!!!!
That’s right! The book launch is December 3, 2024-the day it is released. My heart is dancing and, on that day, I can’t promise that my feet won’t be too. After all, I did include a Playlist towards the end of the book, and you know I’ll have it playing at my book event.
I hope you will consider coming to support me on that day. This book is a long time coming and it’s just the beginning. That’s right, not only is another book coming, I am on the second draft (a Rom-Com) and it is fabulous! My PR team, BooksSparks

(480) 650-1688has been doing a truly wonderful job at getting my name out there. I had two Podcast interviews on Monday. (I’ll post when the air dates are as soon as I know). So fun. I hope I didn’t ramble, but I probably did. There is so much to say about those three years overseas.
As I have shared in the past, I had a Literary Agent call me a “Nobody” and that was why she “passed” on representing me. Her choice, however wrong it was. (hee/hee) It stung like the shots in the days of yore with hypodermic needles, but I did not let her desire to only represent celebrities deter me.
You are always, always a “Somebody.” You get to define who you are, and it can evolve as you desire. Is it easy? Ugh, no! Tell me of the “Somebody” you are. Tell me please!
Oh, how am I handling the election results? I am continuing to be “me,” and to work with my Sphere of Influence. Was I devastated? You know it. Did it crush me? Hell no.
Spiraling back (getting off my soapbox), please come to my Book Launch. If you can’t, maybe you know someone who can. I promise, I will choose a funny passage (there are many) from which to read, the music will be great, the bookstore is amazing and let us make community.
Thank you for reading and as always, I plead with you, my readers to tell me a story. Tell me something funny. Tell me something sad. Tell me something I don’t know. Hit the Heart just to show you at least opened my piece. I appreciate it all.
Always a heart. ❤️
Mary, congratulations on your published book and the book launch. Enjoy it all !
